Adding to the plethora of new features that Google has been introducing to Maps, the search-engine giant would now predict transit crowdedness of buses and trains for passengers.

The new feature has already been made available in around 200 cities around the globe, The Verge reported on Thursday.

The search-engine giant is basing these details on past rides and for months and has been asking some people who use Maps to provide additional details about the level of crowdedness of their transit trips.

Google Search, Assistant get special World Cup features

Keeping in line with the the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 action, Google on Wednesday introduced special features to its Search, Assistant to help people get all the important match updates.

Users can now explore the tournament table, stats and upcoming matches right by just typing “ICC Cricket World Cup” on Search in languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and Urdu, the company said in a statement.

For people who would not be able to watch the match Live, Google would show short video clips of match highlights and allow people to read through live commentary in English and Hindi.

To keep track of all the matches, users would be allowed to pin real-time scores on their Android phone screens from Search on mobile browsers or from the Android Google App, said the company.

In addition, Google Assistant would also help users keep up with the World Cup action by answering questions like “Hey Google, when does India play next?”

You can even get up-to-date stats by asking, “Hey Google, what are the current Cricket standings?” This also works in Google Search.

New drug shows promise in halting spread of brain cancer

Scientists have developed a novel drug that could block glioblastoma — the deadliest form of brain cancer — from spreading.

The tissues in our bodies are largely made of fluid. It moves around cells and is essential to normal body function. But in some cases, this fluid may be doing more harm than good.

In people who have glioblastoma, this fluid has a much higher pressure, causing it to move fast and forcing cancer cells to spread.

The AMD3100 drug, which has already been used in clinics, was found effective in stopping the inevitable cancer cell spread, the researchers said.

“I am hopeful that since the drug that we used to block flow stimulation is currently used in patients that maybe clinicians, when they do consider using convection enhanced delivery, will combine that with this drug,” said lead author Chase Cornelison, a postdoctoral researcher at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

In the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, the team explored the flow of interstitial fluid — that surrounds cells in the body — in the spread of glioma cells.

Composed of circulating cerebrospinal fluid, cellular waste and blood plasma, the interstitial fluid flow has been previously linked with an increased invasion rate of glioblastoma, or brain tumour cells.

The researchers tested the AMD3100 drug and found that it could block the rapid movement of the brain’s interstitial fluid flow and the spread of cancer cells.

They also tested the drug on mice with glioblastoma to test how a particular approach to delivering cancer treatment, called convection enhanced delivery, caused glioma cells to invade the rest of the brain.

“It (glioblastoma) is so deadly, and there hasn’t been a shift in treatment response in decades. Something needs to change… Looking at fluid flow, maybe there’s an answer there that we haven’t seen,” added Jennifer Munson, Assistant Professor.

Facebook has recorded 16,580 data requests from the Indian government in the first six months of 2018 — a steep rise compared to a total of 22,024 requests in the full year of 2017 and 13,613 in 2016.

In the January-June 2018 period, Facebook provided some data to the government in 53 per cent of the cases, although the social networking giant did not reveal which kind of data as it published its transparency report late on Thursday.

Facebook responds to government requests for data in accordance with applicable law and its terms of service.

“Each and every request we receive is carefully reviewed for legal sufficiency and we may reject or require greater specificity on requests that appear overly broad or vague,” the company said.

Facebook also received 15,963 requests from India for “legal process,” 23,047 users’ requests and 617 emergency requests (half of these were met).

In May this year, Facebook said it recorded a massive increase in the total number of Indian government requests for 2017 — a rise of nearly 62 per cent compared to the global average of 30 per cent.

The social networking major also accepts government requests to preserve account information pending receipt of formal legal process.

“When we receive a preservation request, we will preserve a temporary snapshot of the relevant account information but will not disclose any of the preserved records unless and until we receive formal and valid legal process,” said Facebook which received 1,000 such requests from India.

Globally, the government requests for account data increased by around 26 per cent compared to the second half of 2017 — increasing from 82,341 to 103,815 requests.

In the US, government requests increased by about 30 per cent, of which 56 per cent included a non-disclosure order prohibiting Facebook from notifying the user.

“During the first half of 2018, the number of pieces of content we restricted based on local law increased 7 per cent, from 14,280 to 15,337,” said Facebook.

It also identified 48 disruptions of Facebook services in eight countries in the new reporting period, compared to 46 disruptions in 12 countries in the second half of 2017.

During this period, Facebook and Instagram took down 2,999,278 pieces of content based on 466,810 copyright reports, 203,375 pieces of content based on 69,756 trademark reports, and 641,059 pieces of content based on 29,828 counterfeit reports.

The International Space Station (ISS) has enough supplies of food, water and life-supporting materials until the next summer, mission control head of the ISS Russian segment Vladimir Solovyov said Sunday.

Solovyov, also a cosmonaut, made the remarks at a lecture at the Moscow State University, after a Russian spacecraft failed to deliver new crew and materials to the station, according to TASS news agency.

The capsule of the Russian Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft with Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin and U.S. astronaut Nick Hague on board made an emergency landing in Kazakhstan Thursday after the carrier rocket malfunctioned shortly after lift-off.

Facebook to allow up to 250 people on group chat

Social networking giant Facebook is rolling out the ability for members of Facebook Groups to launch group chats that, up to 250 members could join, the media reported.

“Facebook Groups” gives the 1.4 billion active users of the app a platform to collectively plan events, arrange in-person meetings, or have deeper discussions with their close ones or people of similar interests.

“Instead of immediately alerting you of every message in every thread, you’ll first get a Facebook Groups notification inviting you to each new group chat you have to voluntarily join to receive further notifications,” TechCrunch reported on Thursday.

This update that Facebook is planning on gradually rolling out, would also facilitate audio and video calls accommodating up to 50 members at once.

Users would have an option to browse through active chat threads, launch a new one, turn off notifications for message reactions or Messenger games and opt-in to be notified only if they have been “@mentioned” in the thread.

Group admins would have the authority to always shut down a group chat or limit their creation to only other admins, the report added.

Previously, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned platform allowed only up to 150 people on a Group chat at once.

Google has appealed against the European Commission’s nearly $5 billion fine that was imposed on the tech giant in July for illegally using Android mobile devices to strengthen dominance of Google’s Search engine.

The Commission’s ruling gave Google 90 days to end the anti-competitive behaviors or face additional penalty.

According to a report in The Verge, Google on Tuesday filed the appeal.

The Commission said that since 2011, Google has imposed illegal restrictions on Android device manufacturers and mobile network operators to cement its dominant position in general Internet search.

“Our case is about three types of restrictions that Google has imposed on Android device manufacturers and network operators to ensure that traffic on Android devices goes to the Google search engine,” said Commissioner Margrethe Vestager who is in charge of competition policy.

“In this way, Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine. These practices have denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete on the merits.

“They have denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile sphere. This is illegal under EU antitrust rules,” Vestager added.

In particular, Google has required manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and browser app (Chrome), as a condition for licensing Google’s app store (the Play Store).

The company made payments to certain large manufacturers and mobile network operators on condition that they exclusively pre-installed the Google Search app on their devices.

The Commission also found that Google prevented manufacturers wishing to pre-install Google apps from selling even a single smart mobile device running on alternative versions of Android that were not approved by Google.

Reacting to the ruling, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in July the company will appeal against the Commission’s decision.

The decision, according to the Google CEO, ignored the fact that Android phones compete with iOS phones.

Cine, TV artists association condemns Tanushree Dutta’s sexual harassment

After Tanushree Dutta accused actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment, the Cine & TV Artists Association (CINTAA) strongly condemned any act that outrages the modesty of any individual.

A statement released on Tuesday said: “CINTAA strongly condemns any act that outrages the modesty of any individual and any form of sexual harassment is unacceptable to us.

“After going through Tanushree Dutta’s complaint, which was filed with the then Executive Committee of CINTAA in March 2008, we feel that the decision was taken in the Joint Dispute Settlement Committee of CINTAA and Indian Film and TV Producers Council (which was then known as Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers) in July 2008 was not appropriate, as the chief grievance of sexual harassment wasn’t even addressed.”

She had first levelled harassment accusations against Nana in 2008 after the incident took place on the sets of the film “Horn ‘ok’ Pleassss”.

Last month, Tanushree said in an interview that the #MeToo movement will never arrive in India because of the industry’s hypocrisy. It refreshed discussions about her unsavoury experience and allegations.

While the CINTAA officials have urged every member of their association to file complaint of sexual harassment immediately after facing it, the authority mentioned: “Unfortunately, CINTAA’s constitution bars us from taking up any case which is more than three years old. Hence, we appeal to the authorities to take cognizance of Ms Dutta’s statements and conduct an impartial and speedy enquiry so that truth and justice may prevail.”

ED attaches Nirav Modi’s foreign assets worth Rs 637 cr

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Monday it has attached foreign properties of fugitive diamond jeweller Nirav Modi worth Rs 637 crore in its ongoing investigation into the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud.

A senior ED official said that the financial probe agency has been working in close coordination with other foreign agencies in order to identify and attach foreign properties of Nirav Modikept secret at various international locations.

The attached properties were in the form of jewellery, bank accounts and immovable properties.

The official also said that it has brought diamond jewellery worth Rs 22.69 crore back to India from Hong Kong.

According to the ED, a stock of jewellery was exported to Hong Kong after a case was registered against Nirav Modi by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in January.

This was kept in a vault of a private company in Hong Kong on behalf of Nirav Modi.

“The agency contacted the company and its London headquarters and after much persuasion and follow up, it successfully brought back the jewellery to India,” the official said.

He also said that the stock value of the jewellery was around Rs 85 crore and the jewellery was sent to Hong Kong by Firestar Group of Companies. On independent valuation, the value of jewellery came to Rs 22.69 crore.

The ED has also attached a flat in south Mumbai worth Rs 19.5 crore which was on the name of Nirav Modi’s sister Purvi, who is a Belgian national.

The official said that the flat was purchased by Purvi in 2017 and the deed was signed by Nirav Nodi’s brother Neeshal, who is also a Belgian national and who held a power of attorney.

“But the consideration of the flat was paid by Purvi through her Barclays Bank account maintained in Singapore,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the agency also attached five bank accounts containing over Rs 278 crore, belonging to Nirav Modi, Purvi and others in the case.

Interpol has issued an RCN against Nirav Modi, Neeshal, Purvi and his executive Subhash Parab.

Interpol on Monday on the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ED issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Nirav Modi’s trusted official Aditya Nanavati in the PNB fraud.

According to CBI sources, Nanavati’s links with Neeshal have been found.

Nanavati used to head the operations of the Firestar Diamond’s business in Hong Kong. It is learnt that he was also in Belgium.

Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi of Gitanjali Group are under probe by both the CBI and ED. The ED had on May 24 and 26 filed the charge-sheets against both.

Non-bailable warrants have been issued against them.

Nirav Modi left India along with his family in the first week of January, before the scam was reported to the CBI.

17 charged for Apple store theft worth $1 mn

Police in the US has announced the arrest of 17 persons in connection with robberies targeting Apple stores across 19 counties in California that has caused a loss of over $1 million.

Earlier this week, electronics worth tens of thousands of dollars were stolen from the Palo Alto Apple store in California in less than 12 hours during the iPhone XS launch weekend.

In two days, the Palo Alto store was robbed of $107,000 worth of iPhones, computers and electronics.

The two robberies at the Palo Alto Apple store comes after last week’s launch of the iPhone XS and super premium iPhone XS Max which attracted higher than average enthusiasts to Apple stores through the weekend.

“The defendants are charged with entering the stores in large groups wearing hoodies and snatching products on display,” Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement on Friday.

In some instances, the group was able to grab more than $20,000 in merchandise.

“Seven adults were arrested on September 25 and booked in the Alameda County Jail. Another is in custody in Sonoma County. Arrest warrants have been issued for nine other suspects. The probe is on,” Becerra added.

Notably, burglaries at Apple stores have become common over the past few years, with suspects taking incredibly quick approaches to swiping expensive products.

Between late August and September, six Apple Stores in the region were reportedly robbed at least nine times.

On Sunday, an Apple Store in Santa Rosa area was also looted for the second time in less than a month, according to Fox News.
